The feast of Divine mercy celebrated every year on the Octave of Easter as instructed by our Lord Jesus to St. Faustina Kowalska was promoted by Pope John Paul II in the year 2000. But in reality, the first feast of Divine mercy was on Good Friday itself, the day the heart of Jesus was physically pierced open and the two rays of blood and water gushed forth in front of the witnesses standing next to the Cross. The Centurion was taken aback and reeled with the force of the water and blood which came forth from the lanced side of Christ after our Lord had given up his spirit. This divine happening changed his life there on that spot in Calvary and he uttered these words; "Truly this man was the Son of God."
A Wine press as we all know is a place where countless grapes are pressed and crushed and the juice flows forth like a sea to be made into wine. The prophet Isaiah (63:3), compared the blood which streamed forth like a torrent from the body of Christ to a wine press. For he was literally crushed in the most damaging way, the blood oozed out in a continuous flow until there was no more blood to be shed. He also foretold the Lord's wrath as there was none from the nations standing by him in his suffering. He trod the wine press alone and the blood of all spurted on his garments and stained his clothing.
Centuries later, Jesus appeared to St. Faustina to make the world remember this outpouring of blood that he shed for us all, the victim, the oblation. When we gaze at the image of Divine Mercy, similar to how Jesus appeared to her, we are reminded of two main aspects :
1. The Water which is a renewal of our Baptism and entrance into the family of the Trinity. We become co-heirs with Christ.
2. The Blood which was for the atonement of our sins. The floodgates of mercy opened to all to avail of the Lord's endless graces.
The world soon forgot the heavy and pain staking price that Jesus paid on the cross, the trauma of his Mother seeing him suffer.
Where once, Jesus had changed water into wine at Cana in overflowing barrels, the wine in his first miracle too representing his blood, the cross became the final altar of sacrifice for the last drop of his blood.
We are in the days of the Easter season and the Risen Christ is still shedding his blood in the Eucharist.
We have seen numerous miracles on how from the frail host has oozed blood in many Churches around the world to this present date.
Just before his passion, the Lord told his followers that unless we eat his flesh and drink his blood, we can have no part in him.
The crowd thought this was absurd as to how could they eat his flesh and drink his blood?
But once again at the Last Supper, Jesus reiterated, "Take and eat my body.", "Take and drink my blood".
Perhaps we too go to mass thinking this is a symbolic representation of the sacrifice of Jesus on Calvary.
But miraculous events and investigations of these occurrences have proved that the host is indeed the flesh of Christ which we consume and the wine is his blood.
In a testimony at the Church of Our Lady of Peace on 25th July, 2018, a woman praying had a supernatural experience where she saw Our Lady surrounded by angels. The Blessed Virgin revealed a message to her on the many souls who were released from purgatory on that day. She asked her to receive the body of her son. The woman opened her mouth with a clear tongue. As soon as the host was placed on the tongue of the woman by Our Lady, it changed into a piece of flesh. The body of Christ!
In another incident in a town in Mexico at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish on July 25, 2022, the Eucharist started beating like a human heart during the Eucharistic adoration and after a woman had received communion, the host started beating in her mouth.
Maybe the next time, we receive the Lord in Holy Communion, let us go with all the joy and anticipation in our hearts to receive him and after having done so to actually ponder that we have consumed his body and blood and if we have realised the significance of this, then we will also realise that he become a part of us and we are a part of him and having him in us means that we can go through life secure that he will take care of us and protect us, there is nothing to fear.
The Risen Lord still stays with us when the day is bright, when the day is coming to a close, when the darkness threatens and even when we are frightened he tells us the same words as he did to his disciples before his ascension, "Do not be afraid. I am with you always, until the end of time."
