Apologetics
Age or status in society should not be a hindrance to achieving the status of a humble man. The older and the greater alike can be meek and they can display it for the world to see.
This was the case with John the Baptist and the Lord Jesus Christ.
John, the Baptist, the older.
Every Bible Student knows that John the Baptist was six months older than Jesus Christ, by flesh reckoning.
"Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
3:14 But John forbade him, saying, I have a need to be baptized of thee and comest thou to me?" Matthew 3:13,14.
As the need arose, Jesus came to be baptized at River Jordan by John the Baptist. The older honored the greater by humbling himself before him by telling him that he was the person who should have come to Jesus Christ for a better baptism, by Spirit and fire.
He saw himself as someone who ought to visit Jesus Christ for baptisms, by fire and spirit. He did not count his age as something to intoxicate him. He humbled himself before the Greater.
One interesting thing is that John the Baptist did not fail to advertise the greatness of Jesus Christ to the people who came to him for baptism. He declared to them, "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Matthew 3:11"
Oh, what a humble man he was! He recognized the might of Jesus Christ and declared it to others, not considering his age. Can you humble yourself like this? Can I also do the same? May the Lord help us in the name of Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ, The Greater.
Jesus Christ knew Who He was, and still is, a Man of immeasurable might. He did not allow this to inflate Him, He went to someone inferior to Him for baptism. When John the Baptist refused, He encouraged him to baptize Him at least for righteousness' sake.
"And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered him. Matthew 3:15.
Meekness of the Older: forbidding Jesus Christ to come to him for baptism. He saw himself as someone who ought to visit Jesus Christ for baptisms, by fire and spirit.
Meekness of the Greater: allowing John to baptize Him.
Irrespective of an Elect's age or status, he is expected to be humble.
The Scriptures unfold the mind of the Lord towards His people thus,
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14.
Humbleness is of great benefit, may the Lord help us all to be humble throughout our lives in the name of Jesus Christ. Stay blessed and prepared for the imminent coming of the Lord.
