Yesterday marked the end of the study in John “As Jesus Walked and Talked”. I hope that you enjoyed and benefited from this journey through His Word. I hope that we got to know Him and love Him a little more as He walked and talked. I know that it blessed my heart as I meditated upon His words.
As a finale I borrowed from the passage in Luke where we get to listen in on Jesus’ last words to His disciples before His heading Home.
“Then He said to them, 'These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things. Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. And they worshipped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. Amen.”
Luke 24:44-53
Jesus is reviewing what He had been speaking of during His years of walking and talking with the disciples. There was an imperative "must" that all things prophesied of Him in the Word of God be fulfilled.
What an unparalleled blessing to them that their understanding was opened by Him that they may comprehend the Scriptures.
The mandate was given to them to carry these life-altering truths far and wide to a world so in need of the Saviour. Power would be graciously given to them to do so.
He led.... and they followed one last time. Going as far as Bethany, He raised hands of blessing upon them and serenely ascended back to His true home. Worship was the only fitting reaction that flowed from them as they returned to their lives..... lives never to be the same but yet in possession of a great joy as they continued in an attitude of praise to and blessing of God. Praise and blessing for the miraculous years spent in His presence and of being recipients of truths about Him that changed them and would change others also.
His physical presence was curtailed but spiritually, because of the gift of the Holy Spirit, He would abide with them (and us) in an equally comforting and motivating way. “Lo I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen ” Matthew 28:20
