'So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.' James 4:17 (ESV)
These words come as a strong rebuke for those of us who often can't be bothered or don't feel like doing something or perhaps say that we will get around to it tomorrow. Our LORD does not excuse laziness, apathy and procrastination. The sin of neglect and omission for things that we know need to be done are undoubtedly sins not pleasing to God.
We cannot carry on humouring ourselves into thinking that our failure to attend to what is right is permissible. It is not. When we fully understand in our heart that all sin is a putrid offence to God, we will be eager to flee it and chase hard after only what pleases Him, doing the next right thing all the time.
Let's be encouraged by the words of James 3:13, 'Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in meekness of wisdom.' Just as James exhorts us to not fail to do the right thing, he goes onto encouraging us to show understanding by having right conduct full of meekness and wisdom. Right, godly living demonstrated by acts of faith and love is our best choice that results in peace and joy and always brings pleasure to our Father.
'Dear LORD, forgive me for apathy, laziness and procrastination, sins that offend you and hurt both myself and others. Holy Spirit please stir me to be zealous for good works that bring blessing to others and pleasure to my Heavenly Father. Amen.'
