We are the Easter people presently rejoicing and celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus. But we clearly need a greater in-depth to the meaning of the Resurrection and all that it holds for us in the next life.
How do we define a Resurrected body? Jesus gave us an indication of this when he appeared to his disciples soon after he rose from the dead.
At the tomb, when Mary Magdalene encountered Jesus, she did not recognise him which means the resurrected form will have a different appearance.
Similarly on Lake Tiberias, when Jesus instructed the apostles who went fishing and had caught nothing, to cast their nets on a particular side which enabled them to haul in a great catch of fish, at that time, Peter and John knew that the person standing on the shore was Jesus but again his appearance was different. Also when the two disciples were joined by him on the road to Emmaus, they perceived him to be a stranger. Later in the breaking of bread, he disappeared from their sight.
In the upper room where the disciples were hiding, Jesus came and stood in the midst of them, even though the doors were bolted, they could touch his hands and feet. He passed through the walls. Jesus ate a meal with them. These all point to how our own resurrected bodies will be like. We will be able to appear, disappear, walk through doors and walls, eat food and our souls will be joined to our new self. We will be with our same thoughts, emotions but all in a different form.
In Theology, the names given to describe all the privileges of the Resurrected body are known as :
1. Impassability - We will no longer be sick, tired or weighed down. We will also no longer sin as we will be in the freedom of Christ.
2.Subtlety - We will also be able to move freely without any hindrances from physical barriers as the soul will be in control of the body.
3. Agility - We can be in one place at a time and in the next at a different and far away place as this body will be agile and full of supernatural strength.
4. Clarity - We will radiate the glory of God in heaven. Every other being that we meet in Heaven will exude this same glory and we will all be in one unity in the salvation of God.
The Apostles testified and witnessed to the Risen Christ.
We read in 1 John 3:2; "Dear friends, now we are children of God and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is." and 1 John (1:1,3); "That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched, This we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. "
Also in John (1:14); "We beheld his glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth."
Jesus had also told his disciples before his death in John (11:25) ; "I am the Resurrection and the Life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die."
The Blessed Virgin Mary as history recounts, on her death bed was visited by her son from Heaven who came personally to take her soul with him. She was informed of her death three days prior by the Archangel Gabriel who had first given her the good news of the Incarnation. We all know that after her body was buried in Jerusalem, and some time later on exhuming, the tomb was empty which means that she assumed into Heaven and was taken up by her Son and the choirs of Angels. Since she had borne the Son of God, her body would not be allowed to undergo decay or corruption.
I came across a moving poem penned by a grieved one, two lines of which were indeed so relatable : "When I go, don't learn to live without me, just learn to live with my love in a different way."
I am sure our loved ones from above are present with us in spirit in some way or the other, their presence very close to us.
As a grieving relative told me a few days ago that to grieve for someone is good because it means that we loved the person so much and miss their presence.
This is really true because sometimes in being practical and sensible, we can loose out on some very precious emotions of the soul. To move on and be cool in life cannot take a higher precedence over the feelings in the hearts which should be nurtured and preserved with love until the reunion day in heaven.
For after all, we are all Citizens of Heaven. Our passport is stamped forever with the blood of Jesus. Our entry pass is straight into the arms of the Risen Christ. In order to ensure a smooth and definite passage into heaven and claim our eternal citizenship with the Lord, we need to live the life that Jesus did while on earth, follow his teachings and spread love and love wherever we go.
Jesus put it explicitly once and for all in (John 6: 39-40); "For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him up on the last day."
