Devotional #12 in 1 Peter
“Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.” (1 Peter 2:1-3 KJV).
After buying a used house, you must clean and remove dirt, wall markings, and trash left by the previous owner. This could be a big cleaning job.
You have a new life in Christ when you get saved. But you must clean out the garbage from the old life so you can experience the blessing of the new life in Christ. As a newborn Christian, you need to fumigate and eliminate the stench of the old sinful life: Malice, guile – deceit, hypocrisies – no more pretending. Be genuine in your faith and life. Root out envy, discontent, and resentment against others. Stop negative, evil talk about others.
Clear out the sinful garbage. Have a clear mind to study the Word and grow. Peter urges growth for all Christians. 2 Peter 3:18 instructs us to “Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” It is a command that we, as Christians, must obey.
Start with the sincere milk of the Word. Study and learn the basics before you delve into advanced studies. The gospel of John is a great place to start. If you have experienced that the Lord is gracious (good and kind), you must learn all you can about this gracious God as soon as possible.
As the baby is hungry for milk at birth, so the new Christian should hunger for the milk of the Word. Constantly be growing as you feast on the Word.
