The Easter season always sets us thinking about our own resurrection and life one day which will be a surety for us all.
As we go through the readings being proclaimed from Easter Sunday, we get a glimpse into this next out of the world and splendid heaven which can be our permanent dwelling place someday.
When we are high up in the sky above the clouds in any plane journey we feel the ascent so strongly, leaving the earth below and to fly higher than the clouds puts us in a position making us feel as if we are so close to the heavens. But it is not so! Only the soul can be close to heaven for in a minute after we give up our spirit on earth, the soul travels at the fastest speed to reach a new threshold, a world above unimaginable, indescribable and more beautiful than all the beauty on earth.
We all would like to dream about and visualize on how this life will be in the next world. Will we be able to answer the questions at the gate posed by St. Peter and St. Paul as soon as we reach the steps of heaven? Will we see Abraham, Moses and the Prophets at once or later on? Will our voices be hushed or loud? Will we be able to make out times and days? Will we be able to see our loved ones on earth in an invisible presence? Will our hearts be hurt at things left incomplete? Will we be in a waiting room in purgatory as we await our turn for our souls to be released into heaven? Will this be the place where our final tears are shed and then no more sadness?
We also speculate on whether we will be able to come and sit quietly bedside our loved one on earth? Allow them to feel us somewhere around perhaps through the sudden springing of a rose in their garden, or the fragrance of a strong flower. Will we be able to watch their every move, caress the hair on their head, gently wipe their tears, smile at their happiness and follow them to protect them round the clock?
There are many testimonies of people whilst lying in a coma or state of unconsciousness testifying to having gone to this beautiful place of green fields and flowers, meeting up with their loved ones and on waking up here on earth knowing fully well that they had transcended to the heavens and retuned back to the world. They were given a glimpse of the nether world.
Saints too had visions where both heaven and hell were shown to them so that they could educate the faithful and bring about a conversion of hearts.
From the time Jesus died more than two thousand years ago until this year, the seeds of the Gospel has been well established on the earthly kingdom. Of course, the early Christians went through persecutions, horrors and martyrdom to achieve what we have been handed down to this day. They could not see the years ahead but boldly and lovingly gave their all for their faith in Jesus and their hard work with the price of their life has paid off with rewards as the Church has grown stronger over the years.
There was no artificial intelligence at the time of Jesus. The Holy Spirit was more than sufficient. It was this spirit that brought to the mind of the early writers of the Gospel all that God wanted to be recorded down. It was not their memory that did this but the Holy Spirit had the power alone to infuse their minds with the words of Jesus.
Today we too cannot see what is in it for us in the years ahead just as many years ago, we did not know that we would be living the present moments of circumstances. But as long as we have the breath of God in us, we must actively pursue the work of the Gospel so that it reaches to as many people as possible.
With so much research being done on the moon, planets and in space, with stories of alien worlds, space crafts and satellites being sent, man has acquired knowledge to some extent but none of these worlds can compare to the one where we are headed to.
For Jesus went ahead of us to prepare a place for us. As he related to his disciples just before his passion; (John 14:2-6) "In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”
We can be rest assured that our mansion has been already built and kept ready for us in Heaven. All we have to do is make sure that we remain in Christ, today, tomorrow and always for He is the Way. Finally, on that glorious day, he will lead us by the hand into the most beautiful dwelling place for the rest of eternity.
