Sleep In Heavenly Peace

The silent stillness hung in the darkness like stars on a translucent night. Silent night, holy night, all is calm……but nothing is bright. Everyone thought I was insane to come up here in the dead of winter by myself, but I just couldn't stay at home. Thank goodness the Baird family lived a little further up the way and managed to keep our potholed passage clear of snow……that dreadful road seemed bumpier and more rutted than ever before. Maybe everything only appeared worse now……since Dan died that is. My world, that wonderful life we had intimately shared was abruptly ended. What remained were fond memories, a few pictures and this wonderful old cabin.
Our neighbor Charlie had filled up the wood bin with his own personal pine supply; fallen trees from an erratic storm had made it necessary for him to brush up on his lumberman's skills. He'd been furnishing firewood to neighbors all around the lake for some months now. We were all secretly grateful for the storm, and publically appreciative of Charlie's hard work and generosity. He even took it upon himself to enter our cabin's unlocked doors and place fresh logs and newspapers in the hearth for some instant warmth. The chill would fade quickly as the fire lapped up the pine pitch and devoured its prey.
