We’d like to think that all marital matches are made in heaven; yet, in desperation many people turn to .com. In the past, searches were made through mail with Lonely Hearts Clubs or newspaper personal columns.
Match making goes back farther than I can document. I do know that Laban was a desperate father. He used deception to find daughter Leah a man. She was no raving beauty and had slim chances to land a man. Her catch was Jacob and their wedding night led to surprises. Wearing a veil, she camouflaged her face and identity. Jacob thought he was marrying her younger sister Rachel.
“So Laban gathered together all the people of the place and made a feast. But in the evening he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and he went in to her. (Laban gave his female servant Zilpah to his daughter Leah to be her servant.) And in the morning, behold, it was Leah! And Jacob said to Laban, ‘What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me (Genesis 29:22-25 ESV)?”
Maybe that’s when the love is blind phrase began.
The Bible gives us the perfect example of blind trust.
“Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls (1 Peter 1:8-9 ESV).”
The church is the bride of Christ. Sight unseen, we love Him.
