“My way or the high way!” Even when it is not said, it is often implied. My way is always the right way and if you disagree with me then you are wrong. That is the way many people feel even when they do not actually state it that plainly. Honestly though, I never have really understood the highway part as people do not usually offer an alternative to their way — until I heard it said a different way. My way or The High way. Allow me to explain.
We silly creatures usually try to figure everything out ourselves and run everything our way. We try to put our Creator in a box and control everything around us. Even when we pray, we want God to do it our way, acting according to our desire and then asking God to bless our fat mess that we made rather than asking Him how we should do it in the first place. When things do not turn out like we think they should (when things do not go our way), we begin to doubt God, wondering if He is really listening to us at all. We wonder why He did not do it our way. Some people even doubt God to the point of rejecting Him and essentially kicking Him out of their lives either directly or by ignoring Him and walking away from His commands. We want it our way.
However, the Bible mentions another version of my way or the highway. Isaiah 55:9 gives us this message from God, “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” God’s way is The High Way. Thus, we are faced with a choice. Do we want it our way, or will we accept God’s way; The High way? If we our honest, our way does not always work out that well, hence why we go crying to God to overwrite the system to make our way work out instead of humbly surrendering to Him and admitting that we were wrong in the beginning. God is the Creator and Lord of everything. If we actually used our brains for once, we would see that it makes sense to trust Him since He made everything and knows how it works. Just like it is usually a good idea to read the instruction manual that the builder wrote for us before we dive in a try to operate some gadget, we should read the Bible, the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth, before we try to run our lives our way.
Not only does the Bible tell us the God’s way is The High Way, it tells us where that way leads and how to follow it. Now this High Way should not be confused with a giant main route highway that many people follow. Instead, it is usually the ignored path, the path few choose. Matthew 7:13-14, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” God’s High way is narrow. It is not popular. It is not our way. Yet it leads to everlasting life. Isaiah 35:8 paints a picture of the Highway of holiness for us: “And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.” The Highway of holiness is traveled by those who earnestly seek after the things of God, those who seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, rather than that which is right in their own eyes. The Bible is full of instruction on how to live a life walking on the straight and narrow High way of holiness.
We are faced daily with a choice: my way, or God’s High way. We can try it our way, but what is right in our eyes is not always as good as it first seems to us. We want it our way until things go wrong and then we want God to save us from the consequences of our mistakes without surrendering our will to His. We want Him to be our Saviour but not our Lord. Yet Scripture tells us that His way is Higher and better than ours. God’s way is the Highway of holiness that leads to everlasting life. It may not be the easy way, the most well travel path, or the most popular road, but the broad path leads to destruction. The choice is ours: My way, or The High Way.
