Have you ever tried shooting a rubber band across the room? There are many different techniques from wrapping it around one hand in toy pistol position to stretching it with both hands like a bow and arrow. No matter in what position you choose to hold it, there are a few details that must not be omitted if the band is to fly well.
To insure a good flight, the rubber band must first have a good anchor point. Without being sturdily held in the front, there will be nothing against which to stretch it and no way to aim it in the correct direction —if it even flies at all. Likewise, our lives must be built upon the anchor Rock of our salvation. Unless we put Him first in our lives and follow His law, we are doomed to drift about on the winds of this world. Only when we focus our lives on Him can we live a purposeful life for His glory.
Once the anchor point has been established, then the band can be stretched. Now this is the part that trips many people up. You see, you cannot just pull it back and let it go. One side must be stretched tighter than the other. This represents how our lives should be ordered. The Bible repeatedly warns us that we must focus most on the spiritual things rather than the worldly desires of the flesh. (Roman 8:13, “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.” Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”) There is a war between good and evil, spirit and flesh. In order to live a life pleasing to God, we must not let our flesh take control of us. We must keep a tighter more restrictive hold on the flesh lest it compete with the spirit and prevent us from being able to live the life that God wants us to live. Paul the apostle said in 1Corinthians 9:27, “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.” Now I do not totally understand how this principal affects rubber bands, but it is quite effective nonetheless. (I’m sure some science geek out there can probably explain it, but I would rather move on to the next point right now.)
To consummate the rubber band set up and initiate its flight, the back part of the band (the part closest to you) must be instantly and cleanly released. The front anchored, the two sides unequally stretched, it is time to let go. In our walk with Christ, we too must let go and let Him take over. If you try to hang on to the rubber band, it will not go anywhere and your hand will probably get tired of holding it stretched. (If you wait too long, it may even dry rot and break in the meantime.) You have to let go and watch it fly.
All of these steps must be accurately accomplished in order to shoot a rubber band to its full potential. Likewise, we need certain elements in our lives to reach our potential in Christ. While the end of your finger may serve as an anchor for the rubber band, Jesus is the anchor and the Rock for our lives. Only when we fix our eyes on Him, seek first His kingdom over all the things of the flesh and the world, and let go and let Him take over can we fly with Him.
Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (KJV)
